Erythromycin

Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used in podiatry to help treat susceptible bacterial infections affecting the skin and soft tissues of the foot and ankle. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, helping to control the spread of infection and support the healing process. Erythromycin may be prescribed when patients are allergic to penicillin or when culture results indicate that susceptible bacteria are present. It should be used under the direction of a healthcare professional as part of an appropriate infection management plan.

Key Features

  • Effective against susceptible bacteria responsible for certain foot and lower limb skin and soft tissue infections.
  • Commonly considered as an alternative for patients with penicillin allergy, where clinically appropriate.
  • Helps manage bacterial infections associated with cellulitis, infected wounds, and minor soft tissue infections of the foot.
  • Supports infection control to promote optimal wound healing when combined with appropriate podiatric care.
  • Available in a range of formulations, including oral tablets, capsules, oral suspension, topical preparations, and ophthalmic products (availability varies by region).
  • Intended for use only under medical prescription and should be taken exactly as directed to help reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.

Important: Erythromycin is only effective against bacterial infections and should not be used for viral or fungal conditions. Appropriate wound assessment, debridement where indicated, pressure offloading, and ongoing podiatric management remain essential components of foot infection care.

Erythromycin is an alternative to Pencillin - Amoxicilline and Flucloxacillin which are on the Podiatrists medical exemption list for Sell and supply to patients.

This product can only be dispensed/sold to customers with appropriate qualifications as evidenced by registration on the HCPC website (POM-S)
