Carbon steel takes a finer, keener edge straight out of the pack. Stainless steel gives up a little of that keenness in return for better corrosion resistance. Both types of Kiato scalpel blades fit the same No.3 and No.9 handles.

Kiato Carbon Steel Sterile Surgical Blades are made from Swiss carbon steel and gamma sterilised. Each blade is sealed in easy-peel foil with a VCI liner, which protects the steel from corrosion until the pack is opened.

Kiato Stainless Steel Sterile Surgical Blades are ultra-thin blades made from Swedish stainless steel. They are gamma sterilised and individually packed in colour-coded foil.

Kiato Carbon Steel Sterile Gouge Blades have a channel-shaped profile designed for corn removal, in 1mm and 2mm sizes. They fit round collet gouge handles. The wider gouge and fine blades range includes alternative profiles.

The Kiato Disposable Scalpel pairs a stainless steel blade with a plastic handle, so there is no blade to fit or remove. A clear plastic guard protects the edge in the pack and allows safer disposal after use.

Blade numbers describe the shape of the blade, and Kiato uses the same numbering system as other blade manufacturers.

Kiato surgical blades fit No.3 and No.9 handles. ISO 7740, the international standard for scalpel blade fittings, sets out two fitting sizes, and these handles use the smaller one. That is why the blades will not fit a No.4 handle, which takes larger blades such as the No.20 to No.24. Kiato surgical blades fit No.3 and No.9 scalpel handles, or any metal handle with the smaller of the two ISO 7740 blade fittings. They do not fit a No.4 handle, which takes larger blades such as the No.20 to No.24. Kiato gouge blades need a round collet gouge handle, and Kiato disposable scalpels have their own integral handle.

Stainless steel is more resistant to corrosion, which suits clinics where blades may be stored in humid conditions. Both are sterile, single use and fit the same handles, so many clinics stock both.

All three belong to the small curved No.15 family. The No.15 is commonly used for short, precise incisions, and the No.15T is a variant often chosen for corn enucleation. The No.15C has a finer precision profile for detailed dermatology and plastic surgery work. Carbon steel boxes for all three are printed with "15", so check the stock code to confirm which you have.

The No.10 is commonly used for callus reduction over larger areas, and the No.15 for more detailed debridement. For corns, the No.15T and the 1mm and 2mm Kiato gouge blades are common choices, as the gouge has a channel-shaped profile designed for corn removal. Blade selection remains the practitioner's clinical decision.
