How to Use Podofix Ingrown Toenail Brace
The Podofix brace consists of an elastic plastic pad, which is glued onto the nail, and an activation wire, which tensions the brace after it is glued on.
After application, the wire lies in the recess of the plastic pad and can be sealed smoothly.
1, Smooth the nail. Use a nail file to smooth the nail, remove any loose parts and create an even surface.
2, Clean the nail. Use the alcohol wipes provided in the complete kit, or a skin disinfectant. You should also ensure that the nail brace is disinfected. Leave both the nail and the toenail brace to dry for 30 seconds before starting the nail bracing application.
3, Bend the brace. Use the cutter included in the kit (or clean fingers), gently bend the brace so that it is slightly more curved than the nail. This will allow the nail brace to lay flat on the body of the nail.
4, Glue the brace. Apply a fine coat of the glue included in the kit to the undersurface of the toenail brace. If too much glue is applied then you may have issues getting the brace to stick to the nail, so start with a very fine amount on the brush and add more if needed. Start at the center of the toenail brace, and brush outwards, ensuring the entirety of the underside of the brace is covered.
5, Position the brace. Position on the side of the nail that is more heavily ingrown, pushing down in the direction of the nail fold and holding in place using the wire for 15 seconds. Ensure the brace is secured onto the toe, paying close attention to the edges and pressing down longer if needed.
6, Wait. Once secure, wait 2 minutes and then insert the tension tool into the wire loop on the brace in order to activate the brace. Turn between 1 or 2 rotations in order to achieve the desired tension. On the first rotation, pull the tool slightly upwards as you rotate, and then slightly down on the second rotation. You should ensure that you complete at least 1 full rotation, but do not exceed more than 2.
FAQ
How long does it take for the toenail brace to work?
Podofix Toenail Brace typically takes around 4 to 12 months to correct nail growth. Each nail brace lasts around 1-2 months before needing to be replaced by a podiatrist, so typically multiple sessions are required in order for the patient to make a complete recovery.
What happens if an ingrown toenail is left untreated?
If left unrated, an ingrown toenail can lead to infections and abscesses, which can sometimes require nail surgery in order to treat.
What other tools can help treat ingrown toenails alongside a toenail brace?
The Ingro-pal nail shaving device can help you manage and correct ingrown toenails by removing unwanted nail growth. The Susol Nipper Ingrown Nail 14cm allows for easy cutting of ingrown toenails, whilst reducing repetitive strain injury for podiatrists.
