FAQ
How does Gehwol nail softener work?
Gehwol Nail Softener works by nourishing the nail and nail bed with conditioning ingredients to soften thickened, hard toenails and the surrounding skin. With regular use, it helps break down hardened keratin, relieving pain and pressure often caused by thickened nails.
The softening effect also makes nail cutting and nail filing easier for the podiatrist and more comfortable for the patient, supporting more effective treatment of conditions such as fungal nail infections, ingrown toenails, and misshapen nails.
What is the underlying cause of thick toenails?
Onychauxis and Onychogryphosis are foot conditions characterised by thick, hardened toenails. It is perfectly natural for nails to thicken with age due to slower cell turnover, especially for those who have decreased mobility.
Skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema can also cause thickened nails, as well as poor circulation. Treating these conditions at their source with dry skin emollients and circulation exercises can help improve the condition of the toenails alongside toenail treatments.
Improper footwear (such as tight or pointed-toe shoes) can also compress the nails, leading to thickened nails over time.
What products can help with thickened toenails?
As well as frequent use of Gehwol nail softener, cuticle cream can help hydrate the nails, which improves nail flexibility and prevents any further cracking caused by thick nails.
Nail files, drills, and nail burrs can also be professionally used to instantly reduce nail thickness, alongside long-term care and nourishment to prevent thickened nails from growing back.
