A Guide to Podiatry Cabinets, Trolleys and Lamps
In every podiatry or foot health clinic, a cabinet or trolley is essential for storing instruments and equipment, while a reliable lamp is key for magnifying and illuminating the treatment area.
But how do you choose the right setup, especially when you're just starting out, or looking to upgrade and modernise your clinic?
This guide will walk you through the pros and cons of the different cabinets, trolleys, and lights available through Canonbury Healthcare, helping you make the best decision for your practice setup.
Types of Podiatry Cabinets/ Units and Trolleys
Cabinets/ Units
Podiatry cabinets and units typically feature a flat top surface, designed to accommodate both clean and dirty working fields, with storage drawers underneath for essential items such as dressings, scalpel blades, felts, and foams.
These units are available in compact sizes (under 500mm wide) or in standard widths ranging from 630mm to 880mm, making it easier to choose one that fits your clinic space.
Most units include a designated area for housing your podiatry drill, along with the option to mount a lamp, either via an integral bracket or an external fitting, depending on your preference.
Some models also include a UV drawer, designed to help reduce dust and microorganisms on instruments awaiting use. While this adds an extra layer of hygiene, it's important to note that a UV drawer does not replace the need for a full and rigorous sterilisation process.

Fully Integrated Workstations
Fully integrated workstations are all-in-one units that include a built-in spray or suction drill, providing a streamlined and professional setup.
These units resemble those commonly seen in dental surgeries and are known for their sleek, typically European design, offering both functionality and a modern aesthetic.
At Canonbury Healthcare, we stock a range of fully integrated podiatry units from leading European manufacturers Namrol and Gerlach, known for their high-quality engineering and ergonomic design.
The Namrol Futura, Duna, and Maxima units are not moveable and are supplied with a lamp whereas the Namrol Activ and Gerlach Jupiter have wheels to allow for cleaning underneath and a lamp is an optional extra.
Standalone Trolleys
Standalone trolleys, typically made from stainless steel, are a common sight in clinical environments, but they’re not always practical for day-to-day podiatry treatments.
These trolleys offer no built-in storage for essential items like dressings, felt, or padding, and lack electrical sockets, meaning they cannot accommodate a podiatry drill or lamp.
In terms of ergonomics, standalone trolleys tend to be taller than standard podiatry cabinets, standing at around 870mm compared to the typical 750–820mm height range. This height difference can lead to discomfort or even repetitive strain injuries in the shoulder when used while seated.
However, standalone trolleys do have their place. They can be especially useful in nail surgery or wound care clinics, where the practitioner is usually standing to carry out treatment.
Key Features to Look for in a Podiatry Cabinet/ Unit or Trolley
Key features:
- Wooden construction
- Fixed or mobile
- Soft close drawers
- Internal or external lamp brackets
- Power sockets
Drawer Configuration and Storage Capacity
These 3 questions will help guide you to your ideal cabinet/ unit.
What do you need to store in a cabinet/ unit?
Bottles and tubs of wipes shouldn't be kept on the cabinet/ unit top when treating patients, therefore do you require a deeper drawer that will house these items?
Do you need 3 drawers or more?
Do you need a UV drawer in your podiatry cabinet?
A UV drawer uses a specialised bulb to help keep instruments cleaner while they’re waiting to be used. While this can reduce surface dust and microorganisms, it's important to remember that a UV drawer does not replace proper sterilisation.
If storage space is a priority in your clinic, you may prefer the practicality of an extra drawer for dressings, tools, or consumables instead.
Do you want a shelf to be able to slide the drill in and out?
Sometimes people wish to have the drill situated on a shelf, this allows the shelf to be pulled out when treating the patients feet but leaving the cabinet / unit in its place. However, having an inbuilt shelf for the drill isn’t an issue as the suction hose on a drill is long and capable of reaching across. It is a personal preference.
Mobility. Do you need a cabinet or unit on wheels?
Is your clinic room limited on space, or shared with other healthcare professionals? If so, choosing a cabinet or unit on wheels could be essential.
Mobile units can be easily moved aside when the room is needed for other treatments, such as biomechanical assessments or gait analysis, making your space more flexible and multi-functional.
In addition, being able to move your unit makes it easier to deep clean the entire floor area, helping to reduce the risk of cross-infection between patients and maintain high hygiene standards in your clinic.
Ease of Cleaning and Maintenance
When it comes to hygiene and upkeep, the design of your cabinet or unit matters. A solid worktop without joins or glass inserts is generally more hygienic and far easier to clean. Smooth surfaces help prevent the build-up of debris and are ideal for use with clinical-grade disinfectant wipes.
Standard podiatry cabinets or units tend to be easier to clean and maintain than fully integrated systems. If a drill in a standard unit requires servicing, it can typically be sent to the service centre, minimising disruption. In contrast, fully integrated units require an engineer to visit your clinic, potentially taking up valuable treatment time.
Don’t forget: the electrical components of your cabinet or unit should be PAT tested annually to remain compliant with insurance and health and safety regulations.
